INSIDE II
School inclusion and transitions after lower secondary level in Germany (INSIDE II)
Joint project of the Leibniz Institute for Educational Trajectories (LIfBi) Bamberg, Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin (HU), the University of Potsdam (UP) and the University of Wuppertal (BUW)
Pupils with special educational needs (SEN) are significantly less likely to switch to regular vocational training after completing lower secondary school than pupils without SEN, are more likely to remain in so-called "measure careers" or receive social benefits at an above-average rate. This drastically limits the participation of many young people with SEN in work and employment. In principle, there is a great need for knowledge regarding the transitions of young people with SEN after lower secondary level in inclusive schools into the post-school transition systems or the world of work and employment (transitions). The INSIDE II project therefore planned to follow the young people beyond year 10 until their transition into the vocational training system or another life situation. The longitudinal research design makes it possible to analyse the individual development of these pupils. This unique longitudinal study from year 5 (INSIDE I) to the transition after lower secondary level (INSIDE II) has particularly great potential to identify the conditions for successful vocational transitions at an early stage of school development. The knowledge generated in the future will provide stakeholders from the fields of education and politics with information on where support systems can be initiated and improved for the individual development of pupils with SEN in the vocational transition and how negative developments can be countered preventively. Our aim was to contribute to the creation of a data basis on the basis of which evidence-based knowledge can be generated. This knowledge can help to increase the participation of students in working and professional life, reduce social and economic risks, discuss aspects of the implementation of the UN CRPD and recognise specific consequential problems of the corona crisis and, if necessary, derive intervention options.
